Work Ethic:
Writing was always my first passion. Journalism was an afterthought. But landing a cadetship with ABC TV News in 1986 was the luckiest break of my life. As a journalist over the past couple of decades, I have had the enormous privilege of recording, documenting and commenting on Australian life, the people and the events that have shaped and challenged us all. My work has also taken me around the world, reporting from places such as Washington, New York, the Middle East and Europe. Here in Australia I have witnessed how the effects of rapid economic and social change have both improved and yet further complicated the lives of women. Through my work as a journalist and author I am committed to encouraging all Australian women to participate in public discourse. I'm hopeful a more equitable, truly pluralistic Australia is in the making.
What advice would you pass on to women wishing to follow in your footsteps?
Stop wondering and start doing! The hardest task and biggest challenge may at times appear insurmountable, but each mountain is piled high with many smaller parts. Start digging at ground level, piece by piece. Keep your eye on the shovel, not the mountain and always take care to bend your knees. Before you know it, you will have moved a mountain (or at least have had a good workout while trying!) Do it to experience the joy of the journey, and share it with love. Bask in that love and splash it around.
